Built in 1883 in the Gothic Revival style, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1988 for its architectural and cultural significance as the only example of a Gothic Revival church in Natchitoches Parish.
Founded in 1884 as the Robeline Methodist Episcopal Church South under the leadership of Rev. R.S. Isbelle, the congregation quickly constructed the Victorian Gothic building that still stands today. Its delicate period craftsmanship, tall windows, and pointed-arch details have allowed it to endure for well over a century, remaining a rare and beautiful testament to 19th-century religious architecture in the parish.
The church also holds a special place in regional film history. In 1990, scenes from The Man in the Moon—the 1991 coming-of-age drama marking Reese Witherspoon’s film debut and the final film of director Robert Mulligan—were filmed in and around Robeline. The old Robeline Methodist Church appears in several scenes, alongside other Robeline-area film locations including the Robeline Cemetery, the Bob Welch Farm on LA Hwy 6, the Trant House near Point Place, and Kisatchie Falls. Additional filming took place in nearby Sabine Parish.
