Throughout the 1970s, the Foundation organized trail rides, commemorative gatherings, and other community events at Los Adaes, strengthening local ties to the former Spanish capital. In 1977, recognizing the enduring Adaeseño military tradition, the Foundation hosted a ceremony honoring the heads of Adaeseño families for their military service, presenting each veteran with a plaque.
Working closely with Dr. Pete Gregory, the Los Adaes Foundation was instrumental in securing the site’s placement on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. Two decades later, in 1999, researcher George Avery interviewed descendants of the Anglo-American settlers who moved into the region during the early to mid-19th century. They recalled youthful romances, family picnics in the pines surrounding the abandoned Spanish fort, and even memories of U.S. military maneuvers in the area during World War II. Many expressed a deep appreciation for the history beneath their feet, knowing they walked among the spirits of the Adaeseños who once lived there.
Following its listing on the National Register, Los Adaes was donated by the parish to the Louisiana Office of State Parks. Now designated as a National Historic Landmark, it remains an important part of the Louisiana State Parks system. The state has expanded the protected area to include the western portions of the presidio and lands associated with the mission complex. Development has remained minimal and respectful, limited to an archaeological lab/visitor center, fencing, and improved visitor access. From 1995 to 2005, the Louisiana Division of Archaeology operated a station archaeology program at Los Adaes, advancing research and revitalizing heritage efforts until it was discontinued due to budget cuts. Today, park staff and interpretive rangers continue to keep the site accessible for public education and appreciation.

Community trail rides to Los Adaes were regular events in Nachitoches Parish in the 1950s.
